About Pearls
As most know, pearls came from mollusks, which include oysters, mussels and clams. However, mussels and clams rarely produce our favorite pearl bridal jewelry, but they are mostly created via oysters regardless if they are in fresh water or in saltwater.
It is also not correct to think that pearls are created when sands intrude into the shell of an oyster. Sand is an inorganic material while pearls are made of organically grown components. Although sands may trigger the creation of pearls, but it is the nacre, which acts as a defensive device from unknown substance that creates the pearls we know and love.
The two types of pearls that are common for consumers are cultured pearls and natural pearls. Cultured pearls are commonly made with the help of a pearl farmer, thus creating massive production for pearls. Natural pearls on the other hand, are made naturally, but are difficult to find, making it an expensive jewelry.
