India’s Wedding Tradition

In India, an interesting ethnic they have there is the mehndi tradition. This is where the bride and groom will have some henna tattoo applied on their hands and feet by a henna artist before the wedding takes place. Just like an American wedding with their pre-parties before the wedding takes place, an Indian wedding is also consisted with lots of pre-wedding, wedding, and post wedding ceremonies, but with long ritualistic and elaborate affairs.

This mehndi tradition usually happens at the bride’s home or at a banquet hall on the eve of the wedding day. Unlike a Western wedding, where the bride and groom are not allowed to see each other until the groom sees the bride with her bridal crystal jewelry earrings at the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom in India will attend the mehndi ceremony together while a professional artist or a relative applies mehndi to them. The design is unique and contains intricate designs. Often hidden within the mehndi pattern is the bride and grooms initials or names.
