Different Meanings of the Color of Gown

In Godey’s Lady’s Book helped it stated: “Married in white, you will have chosen all right. Married in grey, you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you will wish yourself dead. Married in blue, you will always be true. Married in pearl, you will live in a whirl. Married in green, ashamed to be seen, Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow. Married in brown, you will live out of town. Married in pink, your spirits will sink.”

Because of this statement brides also changed their minds with the color of wedding gowns. That was during the time of Queen Victoria when there were a lot of color options for wedding gowns. After Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha wearing her white bridal gown and wedding jewelry, everything changed in colors and fashion. And up until this day, this tradition of wearing white for wedding gowns have been passed on regardless of race, color, and status.
