Queen Victoria and Her White Gown

Ever wonder who started the tradition of wearing the white wedding gown? It all started with Queen Victoria in 1840 when she got married to her cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

During that time, brides did not care much about the color of their gown, although soon certain colors for wedding represent a certain meaning for each class of bride. After the queen got married, wearing her white bridal gown and wedding jewelry, it changed everything. White became the favorite color for wedding gowns and soon followed different classic designs for white bridal gowns.

In Godey’s Lady’s Book, it trimmed down the competition for color choices and made white as the top choice by stating: “Married in white, you will have chosen all right. Married in grey, you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you will wish yourself dead. Married in blue, you will always be true. Married in pearl, you will live in a whirl. Married in green, ashamed to be seen, Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow. Married in brown, you will live out of town. Married in pink, your spirits will sink.”
